When you think of aging, what do you picture?

Most people think of slowing down, stiffening joints, foggy memory, and mounting prescriptions. It’s a narrative we’ve inherited, but it’s not the only one.

What if aging could feel expansive instead of restrictive? What if it wasn’t seen as a decline?

The quality of how you age is deeply shaped by a quiet force: chronic inflammation. This slow, simmering internal fire — called inflammaging — is typically what’s behind the common chronic illnesses that affect nearly 93% of adults over 65.

The good news? It doesn’t have to be that way. A proactive focus on your health now, at whatever stage of life you’re in, can reduce and reverse inflammation so you can live all of your years with maximum health, strength, and vitality.

But the approach has to be complete, with a strong foundation.

Dr. Sita Kedia, neurologist and functional medicine practitioner at PALM Health, illustrates this foundation in a pyramid: each layer builds on the one below it, forming a holistic strategy to reduce inflammation and support healthy aging.

Here’s how to apply it to your life.

1. First and Foremost, the Foundation: Meaning, Purpose, Joy, Deep Satisfaction

Why does this come first? Because emotional, mental, and spiritual health directly influence how well your body handles stress, inflammation, and ultimately, aging.

It’s the foundation that must be solid in order to continue building. When you have a clear sense of meaning, purpose, and joy in your life, your nervous system calms, your cortisol levels stabilize, and your immune response becomes more balanced.

As you reflect on your sense of purpose, start simply with the choices you’re making to improve your current and future health. It’s imperative to be clear on the “why” behind your goals.

Are you making these choices so that you can engage actively with your future grandchildren? To be able to play sports in your 70s and move with ease in your 80s?

Health is deeply personal: connection with the greater meaning of your present-day choices will help you move forward with resilience, and it’ll do some of the legwork in bringing down inflammation in itself.

2. Next, Lifestyle: Exercise, Nutrition, Sleep, Stress Management

Now that your mindset is grounded, build your physiological base. This layer includes the essential lifestyle habits that directly impact your body’s inflammatory responses and aging processes.

These are the day-to-day choices that regulate your hormones, optimize cellular function, and influence every major system in your body.

When you root these healthy habits in a clear sense of purpose and find joy in each of them, they can make a very meaningful difference in your long-term health.

3. Then, a Deeper Dive: Microbiome, Micronutrients, Botanicals

Once your lifestyle foundation is solid, it’s time to refine and personalize. In addition to your daily habits, a functional medicine practitioner can help you treat any health challenges and symptoms you experience by taking a deep dive into your biochemistry, health history, genetics, triggers, and internal imbalances.

Functional medicine aims to find and address the upstream root cause of symptoms rather than just treating them on the surface. This may involve advanced testing in order to:

  • Support your microbiome. The gut is home to 70% of your immune system. A diverse and balanced microbiome regulates inflammatory responses and prevents leaky gut, an often-overlooked trigger for systemic inflammation. Stool analysis can reveal bacterial imbalances, infections, and markers of gut permeability.
  • Assess your micronutrient levels. Micronutrient testing identifies specific deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that conventional labs often miss. Knowing your exact status allows for precise, therapeutic supplementation to close gaps that contribute to oxidative stress and chronic inflammation.
  • Evaluate adrenal function. Chronic stress can dysregulate your hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Testing cortisol levels throughout the day reveals patterns of adrenal fatigue, helping to guide interventions like adaptogens, lifestyle changes, and nervous system support.
  • Measure biological age markers. Tests like telomere length and DNA methylation patterns offer insight into how fast you’re aging at a cellular level. These biomarkers reflect cumulative inflammation and lifestyle impact. Tracking them can validate progress and refine strategy.
  • Screen for mold toxicity. Mycotoxins from mold exposure can quietly trigger immune dysfunction and systemic inflammation. Advanced urine testing can detect these environmental toxins, which are often overlooked despite their outsized impact on energy, cognition, and aging.
  • Understand your cardiovascular health. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) ultrasound measures the health of your arterial walls, offering a proactive window into cardiovascular aging and inflammation. It’s a non-invasive tool that can reveal risk years before a conventional diagnosis.

Purposeful lifestyle habits are always going to be the first step to treating any of these imbalances, but these personalized insights can help you understand what further actions you need to take to reduce inflammation and optimize your health.

This may involve medication, supplementation, targeted treatments, and more (on top of your healthy nutrition, movement, stress management, and sleep habits!).

4. Last, The Cherry on Top: Advanced Technologies and Therapies

These are powerful tools. But, they work most effectively when layered on top of the other aspects of our pyramid. Think of them as accelerators, rather than foundations.

  • Infrared sauna. Infrared heat promotes detoxification by increasing circulation to help flush inflammatory metabolites.
  • Cryotherapy. Brief cold exposure reduces inflammation and pain through vasoconstriction and endorphin release.
  • NAD+ therapy. Replenishment of this natural anti-aging molecule supports cellular functions that are key for energy, clarity, stamina, and detox.
  • Peptide therapy. Peptides, oral or intravenous, can stimulate tissue repair, modulate immune response, and enhance mitochondrial function — all critical for slowing biological aging.

This layer is at the top because its efficacy depends on everything below it. It’s a full picture: Without healthy lifestyle habits and personalized diagnostics all rooted in a clear sense of purpose, even the most cutting-edge treatments may offer only temporary benefits.

The pyramid isn’t a strict staircase, and things may not always happen exactly in this order.

There may be times when sleep slips, stress spikes, or joy feels out of reach. Experimenting in the upper levels of the pyramid may give you insights that cause you to return to the foundational elements. That’s okay.

At the end of the day, this visual provides a helpful place to begin if you’re feeling overwhelmed and don’t know where to start, or if things aren’t working for you along the way and you need to take a step back.

It also reflects the level of impact that particular segment has on your health. The foundation has the broadest impact, while the advanced therapies and treatments have a narrower and more targeted impact when paired with everything below.

To age gracefully is to approach your health with openness, purpose, curiosity, and acceptance. And remember that the choices you make today aren’t only for the current you — they’re for the future you, too.
